For my summer project I chose the story The Time Machine and selected the main character Alexander Hartdegen to work from and recreate. Alexander is a scientist who frantically spend four year creating a time machines which would allow him to travel back in time to stop a tragedy involving his fiancé being killed. He soon realises that the one event he wants to change is the inescapable result of the creation of the time machine.
For this project I designed a two page A5 booklet featuring a cover and back cover, as well as, an A3 poster of my recreation of Alexander. I wanted to make the character more enigmatic and whimsical, so I came up with a design of a young girl in possession of a mysterious time machine that looks like a balloon. The time machine would work by lifting the handler up as the world spins into the future below them. I changed the name from Alexander to Alexandra and wanted to keep the illustration simple. I like how the scratches brush marks appeared and I feel it worked well to show the effects of the time machine, as if using the machine might harm the surroundings if used too excessively. If I was to change something I would research more into different fonts and maybe choose a more bold striking font to work with.

In the booklet I chose two quotes I felt worked well, not only in the book, but also in my practice as an artist. Both quotes are from the character Über-Morlock who is a telepathically enhanced leader of the morlock society. The first quote seen on the first page says. "We all have our time machines don't we? Those that take us back are memories. And those that carry us forward are dreams." The second quote seen on the last page has always been a something I have remember since reading the book as a child and is significant now while working on my current project. "We should strive to welcome change and challenges, because they are what help us grow. Without them we grow weak like the Eloi in comfort and security. We need to constantly be challenging ourselves in order to strengthen our character and increase our intelligence."
