Beginning Stages: In our group we discussed the possibility of having an installation in which the audience would be able to walk into and interact. We talked about having various large sized houses similar to our diorama a few weeks ago, however, these would be 2D and fully painted/drawn. Although we liked this idea we agreed to make the piece more atmospheric and based on a central theme of the book. This is when we decided to create a room of some sort, one idea was to base the room off Captain Cat who is the narrator of the story.
Initially we wanted to create a room with real furniture and objects that the character has or might have in the story. With this in mind we all set out to find objects, furniture and walls to gauge how expensive it would be to create a room entirely out of furniture. After researching into the expenses of making a room out of furniture we thought it wouldn't be ideal and there might be an easier, more effective way of portraying our ideas. At the beginning we thought about having a projector display an animation through the window into the bedroom. The animation would be the dreams of the townsfolk in the story, however, we struggled to think of an optimal way to place the projector and display it in the amount of time we had. We all agreed it would be easier to create the animation and put it on an iPad to display.
In terms of creating the rooms and the furniture we then came up with the idea of simply using cardboard boxes. This would not only be easier to obtain but also easier to dispose of once the project had finished. To get the boxes we asked various stores and many allowed us to takes their unused boxes from deliveries.
