In an interview with the designer of Diana's dress, David Emanuel, he revealed the that Diana often visit him during the early stages of the dress' conception. After one of her visits in which he showed her sketches of the dress he revealed that he promptly destroyed the sketches, in order to keep the dress' intricate design under wraps. Incase the dress ever was leaked and the design was exposed David and his wife kept a backup design for Diana, which fortunately never needed to be used and as a result was never completed. David has said he wanted the dress to make a lasting impression and to be "suitably dramatic" but also a dress which Diana loved.
The silhouette of the dress is quite large and reminiscent of late 19th century gowns worn by nobility with an extensive amount of fabric, creating an overwhelming bloom of ivory. The dress was made with an Ivory silk taffeta and plenty of antique lace, as well as, boasting a dramatic train, which the designers forgot to take into account the transportation of the dress and it's large train to the ceremony and consequently caused creasing in much of the dress when Diana was inside of carriage. Hand sewn embroidery was also featured next to sequins and ten thousand pearls. The antique lace in which David used had previously belonged to Queen Mary of Teck, Queen Elizabeth II grandmother.
